The Pittsburgh Beautification Project – in time for G-20

Posted by sarah | Aug 26, 2009

The Pittsburgh Beautification Project is a new initiative seeking the input of local Community Development programs to identify eyesore properties in their neighborhoods for quick, artistic, cost-free “Beautification” treatments.

To help improve the image of Pittsburgh in time for the G-20 summit, the first phase of The Beautification Project will be completed by Sept. 20.  Volunteers will be painting Andy Warhol’s Flowers on chipboard, which will be pre-measured to fit into the windows of buildings slated for “beautification”.  The flower paintings will then be professionally installed by insured (to full City Code) art installers.  An example of a Beautification Project property at the foot of the Birmingham Bridge in Uptown is attached for your reference.

To increase community participation The Pittsburgh Beautification Project will host Painting Parties at 4800 Penn Avenue (the former Red Star Iron Works garage, donated by Penn Avenue Arts Initiative) at the following times:

First Friday Unblurred, Sept. 4th, from 7 pm till midnight
Saturday & Sunday, Sept 5 – 6, from noon till 6 pm.
Saturday & Sunday, Sept 12-13, from noon till 6 pm.

The Painting Parties are family friendly, although the building has no water or restroom services.

At the Painting Parties, templates for the Flower paintings will be laid out, and participants will be asked to fill in where the flowers need to be painted – in other words, it will be like filling in a coloring book – easy enough for kids and non-artists to participate and have fun, then see their handiwork put out for the public to enjoy.

To participate, contact Bob Ziller with the property address(es) you would like to have considered for the Pittsburgh Beautification Project.  Please nominate properties where formal or casual consent of the owner can be obtained.

For questions, suggestions, or to participate, please email Bob or call 412-606-1220.
